  • Aikido [ View On Map ]

Aikido Ten Chi Kan Dojo is a traditional Aikido Club based in St George, Bristol practicing all aspects of traditional Aikido including Aikido weapons Aiki Ken and Aiki Jo. The Bristol is under the direction of Kobayashi Dojos, Japan and are regularly visited by Japanese instructors from Kobayashi Dojos. Aikido is a practical Japanese self defence martial art suitable for all. Come and join the Aikido training, classes suitable for beginners and advanced practitioners.

Aikido’s founder, Morihei Ueshiba, was born in Japan on December 14 1883. As a boy, he often saw local thugs beat up his father for political reasons so he set out to make himself strong so that he could take revenge. He devoted himself to hard physical training of the martial arts receiving certificates of mastery in several styles of jujitsu, fencing and spear fighting. Aikido is rooted in several styles of jujitsu in particular daito ryu-(aiki) jujitsu, as well as sword and spear fighting arts. It could be said that Aikido takes the joint locks and throws from jujitsu and combines them with the body movements of sword and spear fighting. We must also take into account that many Aikido techniques are the result of Master Ueshiba’s own innovation

Jeff Mills started his martial art study at the tender age of 5. Firstly studying Judo at various places until the age of 15 followed by a brief spell of Karate. Once he arrived at University in 1994 where he studied Business, his martial art devotion developed further. Jeff said: “I was lucky to have a great deal of choice at Luton and studied Judo, Aikido and Wing Chun Kung Fu”.

  • Backwell Karate [ View On Map ]

    timgriffiths
Established in 1978, Backwell Karate (also known as Backwell Shotokan Karate Club) is a traditional club with a long history of helping students from the Bristol area reach their potential through the martial arts.

Sensei Tim Griffiths holds a 5th Dan black belt in Shotokan Karate. He became a qualified instructor in 2001 and was a member of the national kata squad for 12 years, under the auspices of Karate Union of Great Britain’s Chief Instructor, Sensei Andy Sherry, 9th Dan.

We train twice each week, on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings, and both are usually held in the Parish Hall at Backwell crossroads. For those looking for more training, our sister club, Nailsea Karate, also trains on Wednesday evenings.

Training sessions are for mixed ages (age 7 and upwards) and abilities, meaning they’re perfect for both individuals and families alike. For children aged 5-7 we hold separate 8 week introductory courses. Visit the Bushido Warriors page to find out when the next course starts.

We cover a full traditional Karate syllabus, taking you through Karate basics, kata (traditional sequences or forms) and sparring, from controlled drills for beginners right through to free sparring for those more experienced.

Overall though, the emphasis is on your own personal development and helping you to reach your goals. That’s why, when you start and at regular intervals, we’ll ask you what you want to get out of your training at Backwell Karate: whether it’s reaching your next belt, competing in a tournament or simply keeping fit while learning a traditional martial art.

Budo Bristol Bujinkan Dojo was established in 2010 by licensed Bujinkan instructor, Jamie O’Dwyer, to represent Bujinkan martial arts here in south Bristol. Our unique warrior motif, shown opposite, is a symbol of martial virtue. The Japanese kanji that appear represent important values that we try to nurture through training.

Students learn the life-guiding principles of Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu to nurture an enduring spirit and benevolent heart. Training takes place in a friendly, relaxed environment where the emphasis is on developing core principles of movement, distance and timing. Students of any ability are invited to come along and experience this dynamic self defence system.

Bristol BujinkanAbout: Jamie O’Dwyer is the Principle Instructor at Budo Bristol Bujinkan Dojo and began training in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu back in 2002. He was awarded his ‘Shodan’ (black belt) three years later in 2005. Currently ranked at 4th Dan, Jamie continues to develop his ability and understanding of this multi-faceted art whilst teaching his Bristol classes.

In 2010 Jamie opened the doors of Budo Bristol Bujinkan Dojo to his first class and has been teaching Bujinkan martial arts ever since. His enthusiasm and talent for coaching others has taken him on a journey that’s earned him the loyalty of his students and the support of his martial peers. That journey continues to evolve thanks to the group’s connection with the wider Bujinkan community. Budo Bristol embraces fresh thinking and regularly invites reputable instructors along to share their martial knowledge and expertise.

Budo Bristol has flourished since its inception as a genuine Bujinkan-affiliated Dojo. It’s a group that prides itself on always making new students feel welcome.

  • Bristol Kendo Club [ View On Map ]

    kendo 2
Kendo is the martial art of Japanese swordsmanship. Its origins date back to the practical necessity of sword practice amongst the warrior classes of ancient Japan. Modern kendo has survived as a discipline that is accessible to young and old alike.

    Instructor Name: Mr Jason Chetwynd-Chatwin
    Telephone: 07958 753609
    Website: www.bristolkendo.org.uk

In the Middle Ages, Ito Ittosai Kagehisa developed the style that forms the basis of present day Kendo. Kendo historians estimate that there were more than 200 different sword schools and styles by the end of the sixteenth century.

At the beginning of the eighteenth century, serious thought was given to developing armour to protect trainees from permanent disability, or even death, during vigorous training. Known then as ‘Kenjutsu’, the art of Kendo became more popular with the improvement of protective armour, the simplification of many of the vast number of traditional techniques and the acceptance of rules of conduct within the fencing hall.

From Kenjutsu developed Kendo, using the bamboo sword (‘shinai’) to replace the metal sword, and thus allowing the free practice of swordsmanship. The shinai is made of four splints of bamboo held together at one end, with a tubular leather handle slid over the splints and a leather cup at the other end. The shinai weighs around 500 grams, and various basic cuts and thrusts are made repeatedly to build up speed and stamina.

To focus concentration and to aid correct breathing a shout, or ‘kiai’, is made on the completion of each strike. When practising Kendo, padded armour (traditionally made of bamboo and cotton) is worn over the customary dress of the samurai. To score, a good cut must be delivered to well-defined targets (the top of the head, right wrist and the breastplate) using the upper third of the shinai. Thrusts to the throat may be made with the point of the shinai. All the targets are well protected by the armour.

First impressions of Kendo are of a noisy, aggressive and violent full-contact martial art. Kendo is certainly dynamic, but a little study will soon reveal a high level of skill and concentration, together with a grace and physical agility that any choreographer would appreciate. Students are from all walks of life and of any age, and women train on equal terms with men.

Kendo may be safely practised by men, women and children of all ages, and the type and level of practice may of course be adjusted to suit each pupil. The most senior Kendo teachers in the BKA are 7th Dan, with several 6th and 5th Dans who train in various parts of the country.

If you are starting kendo, you may also be interested in this free download: Kendo Beginners Guide – a new and practical introduction for kendoka of all levels, by Terry Holt sensei.

In 1975 the All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF) developed then published ‘The Concept and Purpose of Kendo’ which is reproduced below.

Dan Lewis shihan began his training in Kyokushinkai Karate in the early 1980s and continued his training with Bryan Dowler shihan, Bernerd Creten sensei and Albert Burton sensei when they formed the British Karate Jutsu Renmei. During this time he also trained in Muay Thai. This he continued to train in until he moved to Bristol to study. Lewis sensei continued his Kyokushin training for a number of years whilst in Bristol, during this time he also trained in Ju Jutsu. Dan partnered up with Stuart Gent sensei who was training in a derivative of Okinawan Goju Ryu under Nick Hughes sensei. The Kyokushin club closed after a number of years and Dan put all his efforts into his Goju Ryu training. He found that the Ju Jitsu system was not applied enough for real confrontation. Both Dan and Stuart were like minded in their thoughts on martial arts and wanted a system that encompassed real training methods that would generate their desired effects.

Established in 1997 by Wayne Bradbury, it is one of the longest running classes in Kamon. There is an eclectic mix of students amongst which there are musicians, mechanics, builders, artists, software engineers, to name but a few, with an age range from 14 to 65! Students train together in a friendly and non-competitive environment, learning and progressing as individuals and as a group.

Wayne first started training with Master Chan in Portsmouth in 1995. Having trained in Martial Arts since the age of 17 (1979!), Wayne found what he had been looking for in Kamon: an organisation that teaches a dynamic and practical martial art that anyone can learn but still remains intriguing no matter how many years you have been training.

Wayne has now trained many students up to Black Sash, some of which have gone on to open up their own classes, one in Bradley Stoke in 2001 and another two in the South of Bristol in 2005. These classes, like the Clifton class, are also known for having a friendly environment and being particularly welcoming to beginners.

It is a fusion of many of these hardcore techniques that make up his manstoppers system.

In 1995 after watching the first ever Ultimate Fighting Championships, Kevin decided to test what he could of his system in the cage. Kevin at this time was training with Geoff Thompson and experiencing his infamous ‘Animal day’ sessions but as early as the mid 80s Kevin and his instructors were dabbling in free style sparring matches, mixing JuJutsu and Kickboxing. This was the embryonic stages of what was to become Mixed Martial Arts.

Instructors and volunteers will, at all times, show respect and understanding for the rights, safety and welfare of others and will conduct themselves in a way which reflects the principles of the British Judo Council.

Judo is a discipline with its roots in the Japanese martial arts (Budo). Professor Jigaro Kano created it around 1870 in Japan. He extracted relatively safe techniques (throws holds, arm-locks, chokes and strangles) from the more dangerous art of Jujitsu, taught break-falling, and formed them into a comprehensive sport which he called Judo (“the gentle way”).

Judo has a deep and lasting beneficial effect on the physique and psychology of children. It channels aggression and, because of the close-contact nature of the sport, teaches respect for one’s fellow participants. The benefits of Judo training may be defined as “The Seven S’s of Judo”: Skill, Strength, Suppleness, Speed, Stamina, Self-Confidence and Self-Discipline.

The Pedro Bessa Brazilian Jiu Jitsu School is open to people of all levels and it has affiliated schools throughout the United Kingdom & Republic of Ireland; we pride ourselves on the quality of teaching, therefore we ensure that students are absorbing the art and developing their BJJ skills.

As a competitor himself, Professor Pedro Bessa encourages the more dedicated students to take part in tournaments in order to test their skills under pressure; and perhaps take BJJ to a high competitor level.

Typically the class is friendly in a relaxed atmosphere, also building close friendships between the team, learning & helping each other improve and consequently help the group to develop as a whole. The class consists of stretching and warm up drills, then focusing with a partner to learn the basics of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. For those already more experienced, then comes the sparring, which gives the students the opportunity to put in practice what has been taught.

The Pedro Bessa BJJ School has academies throughout the UK and Ireland. Pedro teaches in Bristol on a weekly basis and regularly visits the other academies with the aim to keep all clubs within the same high teaching standard!

Originated in Brazil within the Gracie family in the early 1900s, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a method of combat that aims to neutralise an opponent as quickly as possible, with minimum damage to either side. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is based around the idea that a fighter should use a variety of take downs to drop their opponent to the floor and subdue them using holds, various joint locks and chokes.

The precursors of the art were Grand Master Helio Gracie and Carlos Gracie, whom later the former became one of the precursors of the today’s version of Mixed Martial Arts. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Gracie family adopted to its practioners a healthy living, which today is also known as ‘jiu jiutsu lifestyle’.

Technique is everything and although it helps to be fairly fit, you do not need to have done any other martial arts, be larger than anyone else, nor have large muscles to use these strategies and defeat your opponent.
